Barbara Hepworth

The sculptor Barbara Hepworth was born in the former mill town of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, in 1921, and it is at the Hepworth Wakefield, a gallery named in her honor, which was created 10 years ago by the architect David Chipperfield in the pleasing shape of a jostle of wonky, gray cubes partly surrounded by a river (it’s a little like a jangly Modernist take on a moated castle keep), that her work is being celebrated in a thoroughgoing retrospective.

Fred Sandback

Read a great article where Jennie Jones is quoted saying “Fred Sandback can make this beautiful line and not have to have it literally be a metaphor for his cultural identity” which made me realize I’ve never blogged about this important artist who bridged minimalism, conceptualists and light and space (I suspect Lydia finds his work influential).

Jean-Michel Othoniel

Jean-Michel Othoniel is a contemporary French artist who works in a variety of media. Employing materials such as glass, wax, and sulphur, Othoniel explores ideas of material transformation. “I want to seduce you with their beauty then lead you to other themes,” he has explained of his work. I would agree they are seductive as I’m writing this blog after ogling the work below.
