Nostalgia

This collaborative work evolved out of several discussions between the artists Ariana Gomez and Sterling Bowen, about the  relationship  between memory and time through the lens of the rituals we associate with physical spaces.  Gomez and Bowen are interested in how over time the development of nostalgia reshapes our subconscious. Their shared hypothesis is that the result of repetition and the filter of time is a reflection of memory rather than objective fact. With this work, Bowen and Gomez compress multiple, different representations of mental and emotional space. Light and transparency are filters through which the work is encountered that act as an allegory on the passage of time. The images in the video are obscured through basic, found materials and painted interpretations, just as the accumulation and compression of memory dilutes and morphs our emotional relationship to an event.
