August 2019

(last update 9/5/19)

Started this one from a sketch I did during a recent vacation. Using the projector again for transfer and drawing straight onto the raw canvas with watercolor pencil to start as well. Rather than try to draw cubes around and up to the edge of the canvas, I’m going to try an approach I stumbled across in the last piece I finished.

After getting some tone and line onto the canvas, I added some white gesso to start to build surface and then began painting back onto the surface. One of my goals is to really build up the physicality of the layers in a few places- and, initially at least, the intention is to use stronger line making, and create some tension between the cartooning role they perform and the notion of finish.
