(final update 7/28/19)
Started both of these at the same time.
The first piece (on canvas) began using a strategy I’ve deployed a good bit lately- colored pencil directly on canvas, with no prior sketch. I then add a stained gesso as the first layer. The new methodology I’ve employed on both of these pieces is an under-painting strategy of employing 3 tones that do not repeat from one adjacent rhomboid to the next. I’ve taken to using little “dots” of painters tape to help me keep track of the overall strategy. There are a number of painterly type things happening in this one about which I am very pleased and plan to explore more.
The other piece differs in substrate (illustration board sealed to a luan panel) and also in the approach on drawing- I’ve been playing around with using a transparency projector.
